Post-Copenhagen, BASIC ministers to meet in New Delhi on Sunday

The meeting has been convened by India with a view to have consultation among BASIC countries and evolve a coordinated approach to climate change-related issues in 2010 in the run up to the Mexico meeting later this year, a senior environment official here said.
Carlos Minc, Brazil Minister of Environment, Buyelwa Sonjica, South Africa Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs and Xie Zhenhua, Vice-Chairman, National Development and Reform Commission of China are expected to participate the meeting along with Indian Environment Jairam Ramesh.

The BASIC meeting follows the Copenhagen climate change meet last year where it was decided to continue negotiations in two tracks relating to Bali Action Plan and Kyoto Protocol for another one year so as to have a final outcome at the sixteenth Conference of Parties in Mexico.

In Copenhagen, the accord was only noted by the Conference of Parties (COP) and could not be adopted in the absence of the consensus among 194 UN members.
"BASIC ministers will take stock of all issues arising from the Copenhagen conference and the steps needed to ensure the interests of the developing countries," the official added.
